Chester E. Rufh

Youngstown - Chester E. Rufh, 86, of Youngstown, died Monday evening, May 25, 2015 at Maplecrest Nursing Home.

Chester was born July 18, 1928 in Campbell, a son of Chester and Frances Krzys Rufh.

He was raised in Campbell and was a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, Class of 1945. After graduation Chester enlisted in the United States Army, 25th Infantry Division and served in World War II in occupied Japan.

After his time in the service, Chester returned to the area and attended Youngstown College where he received his Bachelors of Science Degree. He then went to Florida State and received his Masters in Botany. He went on to work on his Doctorate at Kent State University.

He was a Biology Professor at Youngstown State University retiring in 1996 after 35 years. He had also taught at Brookfield High School and Woodrow Wilson High School.

Chester's second calling was his church. He was a life-long member of St. Joseph the Provider in Campbell where he was very involved in church activities. He was a member of the ROMEO's (Retired Old Men Eating Out), YSU Philosophy Circle, Crime Stopper's, Fellow's Riverside Gardens, Youngstown Historical Society, and Friends of the Butler Art Institute. After his retirement, Chester traveled extensively over the world with his cousin and his company, Trenchless Technology.

His wife of 43 years, the former Jayne Dubyak, whom he married September 1, 1951, died February 22, 1994.

He leaves three sons, Chester Richard Rufh of Youngstown, James Rufh of Palm Harbor, FL, Robert (Suzanne) Rufh of Virginia Beach, VA; one daughter, Kathleen (Joseph) Koken of Woodbury, MN; six grandchildren, Carlene, Matthew and Kyle Koken, Evan, Anna, and Nathan Rufh.

Besides his parents and wife, Chester was preceded in death by his infant son, Richard Rufh.

Prayer Services will be held Friday 10:15 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish at St. Joseph the Provider Church, 633 Porter Ave., Campbell with Fr. Shawn Conoboy officiating. Interment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

Friends may call Friday from 8:30 AM until 10:15 AM at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to Chester's family who are in the process of developing a scholarship fund in Chester's name to Youngstown State University.
