Gerard L. Meehan

Sarasota - Gerard L Meehan, 83, died Monday evening, April 7, 2014 at his Sarasota, Florida residence surrounded by his children and his faithful dog Sweetie.

Gerard was born February 28, 1931 in Lowellville, a son of Thomas and Althia Geiger Meehan.

He attended Lowellville High School and enlisted in the United States Army, serving from July 1948 to 1955 with an honorable discharge.

Gerard was an Iron Worker for Local 207, retiring in 1993 then moving to Florida. While in Florida he enjoyed being the "Coffeeman" at Orange Acres Community.

He was a member of the Saxon Club, Apprenticeship Iron Workers, VFW #3538 and SGT Arms Iron Workers Local 207. He enjoyed boating, remodeling, the Canfield Fair, time in his yard and spending moments with his children and grandchildren.

His wife, the former Ila Ware, whom he married on June 9, 1951, died May 11, 2010. He is survived by his five daughters, Sandra (Edward) Stiles of Sarasota, FL, Cynthia (Charles) Jasinski of Poland, Darlene (Gerald) Miller of Templeton, PA, Patricia (James) Hobbs of Parkville, MO, and Norene Scheck & fiancee Dale Ridenour of Plainfield, IL; son Gerard F. (Gary) & (Julia) Meehan of Lake Milton; 14 grandchildren, Jennifer, Bryan, Ryan, Kurt, Eric, Tricia, Adam, Ila, Kaitlin, Anthony, Collin, Jay, Shellie and Jessica; seven great-grandchildren, Brylee, Maycee, Emilie, Ashlynn, Aaron, Kyla, and Clara; two sisters, Margaret LaBarba and Joan Schultz; sister-in-law, Norene Wilson; and his "buddy" Edward Stiles Sr.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Pat and Freddie Meehan; sister Sue Phillips; and infant son

Gerard's family would like to send a special thank you to Katie, Todd, Sandi and the staff of Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota for making his final journey so peaceful.

Private services were held Saturday at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.
