Juanita C. Gillis, 87

BOARDMAN - Juanita C. Gillis, 87, passed away May 25, 2015, at Assumption Village in North Lima.
Mrs. Gillis was born June 4, 1927, in Corry, Pa. She was a daughter of James Vernon and Catherine Breed Crowell.
She graduated from Corry High School, received a degree in Medical Technology from Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., and later attended Youngstown State University. She worked as a medical technologist at Northside Hospital in Youngstown. She was an avid quilter and a member of TQGIBT (That Quilt Group I Belong To). She contributed to the AIDS Quilt, and was a member of the Knitting Guild, which provided knitted caps and blankets for newborns with AIDS. She volunteered her time at the Youngstown Playhouse and the Youngstown Opera as a costumer. She was very active in political campaigns and other causes in which she believed.
Her husband, Dr. James R. Gillis, whom she married June 23, 1951, died Nov. 4, 1980.
Surviving her are her children, Wayne (Zita) Gillis of Ann Arbor, Mich., Joan (Steve) McElroy of Columbiana, Keith (Leigh Partington) of Washington Grove, Md., and Anne Gillis of Boardman. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Scott (Lacie) Harman and Chris (Sarah) Harman; two great-grandchildren, Nathan Harman and Blaze Potts; and a brother, David Crowell of Alabama.
Preceding her in death, besides her husband and parents, are two brothers, John and Merton Crowell; and a sister, Virginia Hordusky.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Church Memorial Fund, the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown, OH 44503, Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512, or Mercy Health Foundation, 250 DeBartolo Place, Suite 2560, Boardman, OH 44512.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 4, 2015, at 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown.
Friends may call from 5 to 5:45 p.m. at the church.
