Spring Hill, FL - James Alton Hartzell, 81, formerly of Struthers, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 5, 2019 at HPA Hospice Care in Brooksville, FL.
James was born November 12, 1937 in Youngstown, a son of the late James and Helen Austrino Hartzell.
A life-long resident of Struthers, Jim attended Struthers High School and worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube. After the steel mill closing, Jim worked for several steel centers in Youngstown. In 2004, he and his wife Janice made their home in Springhill, FL to be near his children and grandchildren.
While in Florida, Jim worked as a part-time custodian for Northcliffe Baptist Church, but later found his true calling working as a handyman/maintenance person with a team of four of his friends. He got the greatest joy helping friends and neighbors with projects around their homes.
A faithful servant of God, Jim's life evolved around the Spring Hill Baptist Church of which he was a member. He loved surrounding himself with family and taking long walks.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, the former Janice Barger whom he married November 24, 2000; four children, James (Sandy)Hartzell Jr. of Pinellas Park FL, David (Janice) Hartzell of Struthers, Diane (Mike) Tornincasa of Lolo, CA, and Daniel (Laura) Hartzell of Brooksville, FL; one step-daughter, Linda (Joel) Griffith of Rockwood, MI; two brothers, Dick (Cherie) Hartzell of Youngstown and Ron (Shelley) Hartzell of Deltona, FL; five grandchildren, Danielle Moore, Amanda (Brandon) Carter, Danny Hartzell, Dylan Hartzell and Brent Griffith; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Janet Bowman; one sister, Rose Brabrant; one brother, John Hartzell; and an infant granddaughter, Sarah Tornincasa.
Friends may call Monday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Randy Brunko officiating. Interment will follow at the Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown, OH.
