Poland - Ethel K. Sweeney, 93, passed away on Sunday evening, July 28, 2024, at Briarfield Place in Boardman.
Ethel was born March 8, 1931 in Queens, New York City, NY, a daughter of the late Martin and Philomena Klein Kerner.
After graduating from The Mary Louis Academy in 1949, she continued her education at the Katharine Gibbs School in Manhattan. Ethel embarked on a fulfilling career as an executive secretary at the Standard Oil Company in Rockefeller Center for a decade. Her office offered her a breathtaking view that she loved, especially during the Christmas season with glimpses of the ice rink and beautiful decorations.
On September 19, 1953, Ethel exchanged vows with John W. Sweeney. Their union was blessed with three daughters and lasted 48 wonderful years until John's passing on March 19, 2002. Ethel wholeheartedly embraced her role as a devoted stay-at-home mom and wife. She poured her time and love into her daughters' lives and actively volunteered at their schools. In 1977, the family moved to Canfield, Ohio when John assumed a new job position with the DeBartolo Corporation, amidst challenging times for the local steel industry. The family closed on their new home on "Black Monday" with the closing of the steel mills. In their later years, John and Ethel made their home in Poland.
In her leisure time, Ethel found joy in golfing, bowling, crocheting, and winters spent soaking the sun up in Lake Suzy, FL.
Ethel leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family. She will be missed by her daughters, Dr. Kathleen (Thomas) Reese of Hollidaysburg, PA, Dr. Carol (Robert) Terry of Norman, OK, and the Hon. Judge Maureen (Tom Yanko) Sweeney of Poland; six grandchildren, Patrick Reese, Michael (Hannah) Reese, Valerie Terry, Jeffrey (Jordan Larsen) Terry, Zachary (Lily) Terry, and Lillie Yanko; and one great-grandchild, Flora Terry.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ethel was preceded in death by her brother, Martin Kerner.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, August 2, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland.
