Struthers - George M. Chopp Jr., 76, passed away unexpectedly on June 7, 2024 at home.
He was born March 20, 1948 in Youngstown, a son of the late George and Mildred (Biskupich) Chopp. He graduated from Struthers High School, and then joined the United States Army, proudly serving during the Vietnam War. After this time in the military, he went to Barber school and became a certified barber for a short time. George then worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube before becoming a carpenter for the Carpentry Union Youngstown 171 until his retirement.
In addition to the carpenters union, he was also a member of the Struthers VFW Post 3538, the Mahoning Valley Sportsman Club, and faithfully went to the Davis Y every day. You never saw a happier man than when the weather would break and George was able to open up his camper for the summer season and spend his weekends in Geneva on the Lake, his true happy place. While there, he enjoyed fishing, visiting the local wineries, and generally just being outdoors. George and his companion Carol also enjoyed the Great Lakes Medieval fair each year. He also loved to plant large gardens every summer, and looked forward to going to the Canfield fair.
More than anything, George was an amazing family man who lived his life to the fullest. He never let anything stand in his way of enjoying all of life's treasures, especially his children and grandchildren. He was always there for birthdays, baptisms, and other important life events. He never missed an opportunity to spend time with them, even getting a chance to fish with his grandkids about a week before he passed.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children, Tiffany (Cody) Kerr of New Middletown, Matthew Chopp of North Lima, and Rachel Townsend of Ocala, FL; his grandchildren, Caleb Townsend, Alina Santana, Liam Kerr, Layla Kerr, and Cameron Chopp; his longtime companion, Carol Nuth; his siblings, Fran (Dan) Owens of New Middletown and James (Janet Montecalvo) Chopp of Canfield; and his former wife, JoAnn Chopp of New Middletown.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
