Joseph Novotny, 83 Fairlawn- Joseph Novotny, 83, of Summit County Hospice in Fairlawn formerly of Island Drive, Poland died peacefully Tuesday morning at the Hospice Center. Mr. Novotny was born March 9, 1919 in Struthers, a son of John and Katherine Skokan Novotny. He moved to the Summit County area three years ago from Poland. Mr. Novotny was educated in the Struthers School System and was a veteran of World War II serving in England, reaching the rank of Technical Sergeant with the United States Army. After his discharge from the service he was employed by Beede-Poorman & Company on the Southside of Youngstown and after several years with the company became one of the business partners. He was a life-long member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church where he served as a Cantor, Usher, Councilman, and Trustee. He was also a member of the church choir in which he served several terms as president. He received a Certificate of Merits as Parish Cantor in 1974 and the Archdiocesan Deanery Award in 1978. Mr. Novotny was a member of the Youngstown Chapter, Western Reserve Chorus, spending time as Bulletin Editor, and named Barber-Shopper of the year in 1978. From 1956 to 1973 he was a member and supporter of the Poland Community Baseball Association in which he coached and was an umpire. His wife the former Joyce Waywell whom he met in England and married April 12, 1944 died November 10, 1973; he leaves one daughter, Jeannie (Mark) Rogers of Poland; one son, Jerry (Anita) Novotny of Munroe Falls, Ohio; five sisters, Helen Boccio, Mary Mehley, Bette Rosse, Irene Kollar and Dorothy Novotny; two brothers, Michael and James Novotny and two grandsons, Timothy and Daniel Novotny. Besides his parents and his wife he was preceded in death by two sisters, Anne Sussman and Margaret Hudock and one brother John Novotny. Funeral services will be Friday, 9:15 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and 10:00 at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church. Friends may call Thursday from 5-8 PM where there will be a Parastas memorial service at 7:00 PM.
