Lowellville - Judith A. Avdey, 85, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 4, 2024, with her family at her side.
Judith, known by her family and friends as "Judy," was born December 4, 1938 in Girard, Ohio, daughter of the late Raymond and Jean (Thomas) Sturm.
She was a 1956 graduate of Lowellville High School and a lifelong resident of Lowellville.
After high school, Judy was a bank teller at Dollar Savings & Trust and later at Struthers Federal Credit Union. After raising her children, Judy returned to Choffin Career and Technical Center and obtained her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with honors. Judy had a second career at St. Elizabeth Medical Center where she was known for her caring and empathetic smile that many of her patients remember today.
Judy was a devout Catholic and a member of Christ Our Savior Parish in Struthers. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, baking her famous wafer cookies, purchasing and renovating homes, and spending winters in Fort Myers Florida.
Judy loved spending time with family and friends. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and doting grandmother.
Judy is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Walter P. Avdey, whom she married on May 28, 1960 at Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville, OH; a son, Walter R. (Laura) Avdey of Westlake, OH; a daughter, Andrea L. (John, Jr.) Cummings of Lowellville, OH; three grandchildren, Michael (Katie) Avdey of Columbus, OH, Matthew Avdey of Minneapolis, MN, and Steven Avdey of Boston, MA; a sister, Maggie Necastro of Stuart, FL; a brother, Raymond "Buck" (Michele) Sturm of Roswell, GA; sister-in-law, Laina Sturm of Struthers, OH; brothers-in-law, Febe Perry of Lowellville , Tom Grist of Madison, and Don Necastro of Austintown, OH; along with many nieces and nephews and step-family members Joanne, John, Conner and Robert.
Judy, the oldest of seven children, was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Jeanne Perry, Suzanne Grist, and Eileen Necastro; brother Jack Sturm and sister-in-law, Kay Sturm; and brother-in-law, Thomas Necastro.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring Street in Struthers. There will be a prayer service Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon at Christ Our Savior Parish at Holy Trinity Church, 250 N. Bridge Street in Struthers with Fr. Philip Rogers officiating.
