Manuela "Nellie" Lugo
January 4, 1953 — May 5, 2024
Berlin Center - Manuela "Nellie" Lugo, 71, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Manuela, affectionately known as "Nellie," was born January 4, 1953 in Puerto Rico, a daughter of Manuel Lugo and Julia Ortiz Cartagena. Nellie came to Ohio with her family as a toddler.
She attended East High School in Youngstown, until returning to Puerto Rico at age 16. After graduating high school, she enrolled in college classes and taught English for several years, before returning to Youngstown, Ohio. Nellie first worked for Strouss Department Store and then many years in customer service for Bank One and Huntington Bank.
In her leisure time, Nellie enjoyed reading, especially sci-fi, horror, thrillers, and suspense novels, cooking, and gardening. Nellie appreciated the arts, especially anything Celtic, and loved visiting museums. Her quirky personality and genuine love for taking care of others will be greatly missed by many.
Nellie leaves to carry on her memory, her sons, Doel (Molly) Fuentes of Kannapolis, NC and Dain Fuentes of Burbank, CA; and her companion of 39 years, Daniel Karnes of Berlin Center, with whom she made her home.
There will be no calling hours and services are private.
