STRUTHERS - Sandra "Sandy" Louise Battaglia, 79, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024 surrounded by her family.

She was born October 14, 1944 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mildred (Carach) Korhan. She graduated from Ursuline High School and Kent State University. She worked at the U.S. Post office, at the Lowellville and Struthers branches, and also was a substitute teacher for the Struthers school district. Sandra was a member of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Basilica.

Sandy enjoyed playing slots at the casino, bingo, and lottery scratch-offs, and her luck knew no bounds. She often was the "lucky charm" to most of her family. She loved to attend Ohio State Buckeye football games with her son, watch game shows and Hallmark movies with her daughter. Sandy was an expert shopper, finding the best deals for her grandkids.

Her strength was her superpower. She had a special way of touching hearts with her infectious smile. She believed in spreading positivity and kindness wherever she went, often reminding others, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Most of all, she was best known for being an amazing mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with family, whether it was dropping everything to watch her grandchildren's various sporting events or award ceremonies or to be available to watch them on short notice. She lived life to the fullest and cherished every moment.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, James (Michelle) Battaglia of Poland and Andrea (Sean) Heaberlin of Hinckley; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Emma, and Anthony "AJ" Battaglia, Michael and Matthew Heaberlin; and her siblings, Richard (JoJo) Korhan and Marjorie Moore.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Anthony "Tony" James Battaglia, who she married August 9, 1969. There was never a celebration that the two of them weren’t dancing together.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth (Marcia) Korhan; brother in law, James "G.O." Moore; and sister in laws, Patricia (Joseph) Santangelo and Francis Battaglia.

Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 13, 2024 at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, and again on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated beginning at 10:00 a.m. and she will be laid to rest with her husband at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Lowellville.
