POLAND- George W. Davis, 76, of Poland, Ohio, died Friday, May 3, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital. Mr. Davis was born August 22, 1942 in Youngstown, a son of George and Dorothy (Gallagher) Davis.

Mr. Davis was a career veteran of the military, having served both in the United State Marine Corps and the Army.  Mr. Davis assumed the position of Command Sergeant Major, 99th Army Reserve Command in Oakdale, Pa., in October of 1994.

Command Sergeant Major Davis began his military career in August of 1962 in the U.S. Marine Corps. During a five-year tour of duty, he served at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and as an Embassy Guard in Washington D.C. and Seoul, Korea.

He was a graduate of the U.S. Marine Corps Infantry and Security Guard Schools and the Advanced and Senior Noncommissioned Officer Courses. During his military career, Command Sergeant Major Davis had been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon and Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon.

In his civilian occupation, Mr. Davis retired from Mercy Hospital as director of Risk Management.  He was also Vice President and School Commander of Western Reserve Institute, Inc., in Poland, Ohio, where he directed the basic training of Ohio Police Cadets.

Mr. Davis was an active member of the Steel Valley Lodge #193 Fraternal Order of Police, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7538 in Struthers, and the American Legion Post #177 in Canfield.

A life long resident of the Youngstown area and graduate of East High School, George was proud of his East Side roots and the many friendships that began there and were maintained throughout the rest of his life.

Mr. Davis enjoyed golfing, wine making, sausage making and home canning fruits and vegetables with friends and family. During the summer, months he could always be found on his back deck drinking iced tea and enjoying the company of friends.

Besides his wife, the former Judith A. Costarell, whom he married October 3, 1969, he leaves his leaves his son, George A. Davis of Poland; his daughter, Kimberly A. Costarell of Las Vegas; two granddaughters, Hailey Ann Wong and Madison Elizabeth Wong; a grandson, Parker Timothy Wong; and a brother, Larry E. Davis of Boardman.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert E. Davis and Donald Owen Davis, as well as a sister, Delores McKee.

Friends will be received on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland, where military honors will take place at 3 p.m. Interment will take place on Monday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
